Making the House a Home- Edgar A Guest
Making the House a Home
We have been building a home for the last fifteen years, but it begins to look now as though it will not be
finished for many years to come. This is not because the contractors are slow, or the materials scarce, or because
we keep changing our minds. Rather it is because it takes years to build a home, whereas a house can be built in a
few months...
...We knew the sort of home we wanted, but we were willing to begin humbly. This was not because we were averse to
starting at the top. Both Mother and I had then, and have now, a fondness for the best things of life. We should
have liked a grand piano, and a self-making ice box, and a servant, and an automobile right off! But less than five
hundred dollars capital and twenty-eight dollars a week salary do not provide those
things.

Homes And How To Make Them - Eugene Gardner
The somewhat vexed question of mortar you shall answer according to your taste, so far as to choose
between dark gray—“black” it is commonly called—and some shade of red, resembling the brick used. Between
these two there seems to me to be one of those questions of taste, concerning which we are not permitted to
dispute. With the dark mortar the joints will be visible, modifying the color of the wall, in some cases,
perhaps, improving it; while the red will give a more uniform tint, on which not only colored brick or stone
will appear to the best advantage, but the lines of the openings and other essential details are brought out
in clearer relief.
The Complete Home
Blessed indeed are they who are free to choose where and how they shall live. Still more blessed are
they who give abundant thought to their choice, for they may not wear the sackcloth of discomfort nor scatter
the ashes of burned money.
