Kite Making and Flying
WHEN it was first suggested that my husband should write a book about Kite Making and Flying, I
must confess that I, like the rest of my family, was very surprised. I wondered what there would be to write
about. After all, making and flying a kite are quite simple operations! One has only to tie together two
sticks at right angles, cover them with paper or cloth, and add a tail! Of course, one must not forget a long
piece of string, called the kite line. Having done these things, one has only to throw the kite up into the
air on a suitably windy day and away it flies! Or-does it?
My husband hastily assured me that there was much more to the business than this, and, as he began to explain to me
some of the technicalities of the subject, I realized that he knew far more about it than I had suspected.
Since that time, there have been visits to libraries and business premises; letters to individuals and firms; the
house has been filled with specimens of cane, string, cloth and paper; models of kites have been looking down at us
from their places on the walls; discussions about weather conditions and the science of flight have taken place,
and a whole new world seems to have opened before my eyes.
Here, then, is a hobby which provides pleasure, entertainment, and education all the year round. The long winter
evenings present an opportunity for artistic minds and busy hands to make the kites which can be flown during the
bright summer evenings and at many other times during the year. These are the main things, but, as we shall
discover, they are accompanied by many other enjoyable activities. In particular, as one looks round in an attempt
to forecast flying conditions, one is reminded of the wonder and the beauty of the world in which we
live.

WOOD-WORKING For Amateur Craftsmen
THE first thing a beginner must learn to do when he takes a drawing from which he is to make a piece of woodwork,
is to prepare a stock bill of materials that can, be given to the lumberman to fill. Whether the worker gets what
he wants or not will depend greatly upon the specifications he gives the dealer, whether they are intelligible or
not, and whether they allow one and only one interpretation.
Three practices are common in preparing lumber for use: To sell it to the workman in the rough, just as it comes
from the sawmill; to machine-plane the pieces to thicknesses and widths such as the finished pieces demand, so that
only the lengths require the attention of the worker-aside from the making of the joints; and to mill-plane the
stock on two surfaces to stock thicknesses, but allowing the lengths and widths to remain as in rough stock.
The first is cheapest in first cost; the second is the most expensive because of the frequent changes in setting
the planing machine to the different sizes. The third is most common, except where there are to be a great number
of pieces of a given size, because it utilizes hand work and machine work to the best advantage...

The Manual of Ship Model Making
To aid the beginner as well as the seasoned old-timer, POPULAR SCIENCE MONTHLY has prepared this valuable manual of
kinks, short cuts, and time-tried methods. For the first time in the history of model making, the best hints
developed by experts are now available to the amateur. Instead of following blindly from stage to stage in the
construction of a model, the beginner now can use the methods of the professional.
In the pages that follow you will find simple step-by-step instructions that will help you to select and make your
tools, shape your hulls, build your deck fittings, and apply your rigging and sails. Finishing and decorating, one
of the fine points of model making, is simple if you know how.
To fix this knowledge in your mind, you must put it to actual use. For this reason, complete descriptions and plans
for building two decorative models have been included. One model, a beautiful galleon reminiscent of ro-mantic
Spanish treasure ships, forms a particularly graceful decoration. By building it, you can learn a great deal about
model making. The second model, a clipper ship, has all the grace and beauty of the ships that made America's
nine-teenth century commercial fleet famous. In the description of its rigging, the amateur will find the answers
to many questions.
Finally, to make the book complete, a carefully compiled glossary of nautical terms has been included. This alone
will serve to identify many of the parts used on modern as well as ancient ships.
All in all, this manual has been prepared with the hope that it will offer to the model maker the same fund of
information that a scientific handbook offers the engineer. Briefly, it is a ready reference that will make your
hobby of model making more enjoyable and your finished models more authentic and realistic.

The Practice and Science of
Drawing
In a Few Minutes, You Can Be Learning The Fine Art of
Drawing From One of the Foremost Authorities of The Science and Practice of Drawing!
The best things in an artist’s work are so much a
matter of intuition, that there is much to be said for the point of view that would altogether discourage
intellectual inquiry into artistic phenomena on the part of the artist.
Intuitions are shy things and apt to disappear if looked into too closely. And there is undoubtedly a danger that
too much knowledge and training may supplant your natural intuitive feeling.
More than to show you how to draw step by step, "The Practice and Science of Drawing" is also designed to develop
you to express yourself as an artist. Great things are only done in art when the creative instinct of the artist
has a well-organized executive faculty at its disposal.
Finally, You Can Now Learn How To
Draw Like A Pro Without Having To Go To An Expensive Art School!
Step-by-Step Manual teaches you how to become an expert
in drawing and art even if you failed art in High School!

Modern Lettering
and Calligraphy
The tools of the lettering craftsman, be he calligrapher, painter or stone-mason, have not changed with the years,
but the form of the letters and the execution-particularly in architecture-have moved with the times, and we find
neon strip, plastic and other materials providing; new methods of attracting public attention and new problems for
the lettering craftsman to solve. Whether the public fully appreciate the immense use which is made of the drawn
letter is a debatable point, for whether ultimately printed, painted or rendered into metal or stone, the original
is the work of an artist, call himself what he will.
As in Lettering of Today this volume has been divided into four sections, each selected by a practising craftsman
in his own particular sphere. [Calligraphy, Book Production, Lettering in Association with Architecture and
Lettering in Advertising] Within the limitations of these four sections will be found a wide selection of
representative examples of lettering of today. Beyond these limits there are of course many other uses of
lettering, particularly those in which the miniature or illustration plays a major decorative role. To cover them
all with any degree of thoroughness is beyond the scope of one volume and we hope that our readers will agree that
in choosing a smaller field we have been able to produce a more valuable work.
